Miriam 2019/2020

Erfahrungsbericht: 1 Jahr im Giraffenland!

Miriam Román Porro, 25, aus Barcelona / Spanien.

”Here I am, sitting on my computer, reflecting about this year and about my times in my project and the city of Vienna. I remember some days before I left, I posted in Instagram: “and here starts my adventure for the year”, and oh it was.

Since day one, I felt super welcomed by all the people in my project. They took care of me and made sure I was feeling supported in every step of the way. When I say people, I mean, the other care takers, all of the parents and of course my 14 new kids.

I felt like I connected right away with most of the kids and that has always been one of my biggest motivations to keep up with them. I have to say that it’s really heart warming when in a foreign country you get so many hugs from these little adults (like I like to call them).

I have learned so much from them and I will be forever amazed with the patience they showed me with my German. I speak German, but of course I am still learning, and I am still making plenty of mistakes, but what amazes me is that the language was and has never been a barrier in my relationship with them. But, in all honesty, for things to be fair, I thought they should also learn some Spanish… And so they did! I just love when they come to me and tell me some things like “feliz navidad”, “hola”, “choca esos cinco” or “por favor”, I really can’t describe the joy that brings me!

Everything was really going great, but then… Corona happened. I was visiting my family in Spain for 4 days, when they announced borders were closing. I couldn’t make it back in time. I was a bit worried that the kids would forget me, or that I was not going to be able to make it back to Austria, but regardless I was still working from home, sending them some exercises and stories, and luckily we even managed to do some skype session and I was also in touch with some of the parents via whatsapp.

Now I have been back for a month and I am starting to see the coming end of my project. They say you never know the power of a moment until it becomes a memory. And here I am, still squeezing my last days in the Kindergruppe. Days to which I will long for and say goodbye with great sorrow, but also looking forward to seeing what new adventures the future holds for me…
